Wishing for more snow

This weather, my daughter said the other day, is aggravating. Then she started complaining: Why does it feel like springtime a lot of days? The weather swings back and forth too much between hot and cold. I’m tired of looking at the hairy legs of boys who are wearing shorts to school. I wish I was back in Maryland playing in the snow.

I don’t. I’m loving the milder winter here in Charlotte.

My 15-year-old has been looking at pictures of the snow-covered streets and buildings in the Washington, D.C. area remembering all the snow fun she had with good friends. It doesn’t matter to her that the area is crippled by the worst snow storm in decades and is being described as snowmageddon. She just hasn’t taken a fancy yet to our new southern climate.

I’m a southerner and I thought I wouldn’t survive my first winter in the Washington area. I bought my first real winter coat there, I was always cold and I was reluctant to drive in the snow. This is my daughter’s first southern winter; we moved to North Carolina last fall. She’s likes colder weather and enjoys winter sports.

My daughter was disappointed when it snowed here a few weeks ago and our area only got a few inches. On days when the weather here is in the upper-40s to mid-50s, and there are plenty of those, she grumbles that it’s too hot. She jokes about not having to wear boots. She has not unpacked her hats and gloves.

By this time next year, I’m sure I’ll be hearing a different complaint, and it won’t be that it’s too hot.  She’ll be used to the milder winter weather by then and any day below 50 degrees will be cold.
